Engagement with the Council for the Advancement of Native Development Officers (CANDO) National Conference

October 22, 2018 – Edmonton, Alberta

The Canadian Minerals and Metals Plan Secretariat met with attendees to the Council for the Advancement of Native Development Officers (CANDO) National Conference. Participants identified the following challenges to economic development faced by communities, including:

  • The displacement of family members involved in the mining industry;
  • Community and capacity building;
  • Environmental challenges;
  • Employment;
  • Economic development; and,
  • Culture

Representatives expanded on the above issues and suggested actions, including:

  • Increasing access to financial resources for mining communities
  • Eliminating uncertainty and "red tape"
  • The creation of a long-term program to support the development of transparent and transferable skills
  • Highlighting the concept of the duty to accommodate
  • Placing an emphasis on the importance of traditional knowledge and its implementation in community benefit agreements
  • Better collaboration between federal and provincial governments with regards to consultation
  • The development of an accountability framework for parties involved in mining activities
