How can we close the “infrastructure gap” and support mineral development projects?

En fait, le gouvernement doit resserrer les règles fiscales et lutter contre l'évasion fiscale. Il faut que les retombées économiques dépassent les coûts investis par les communautés pour un plus grand partage de la richesse générée par l'exploitation minière.
Si le public est convaincu du respect de ces principes, il appuiera l'investissement de fonds publics pour le développement d'infrastructures.
Find out the locations/mines/communities where it will have the most impact and invest there. Every Canadian should have access to high speed internet no matter where they are. Make that a priority.
Rielle_1011 makes a great point. Garnering public support for infrastructure development and having community buy-in is essential. We need to think about how infrastructure can benefit a community as whole and not just a mineral development site. KKettle's thought on high speed internet is fundamental. Future mines could have remote operators and these types of jobs should be accessible in the north. Connectivity enables participation.

When we sub divide the mining infrastructure to its major elements i.e.; power, transportation (including internet access via fiber optic cabling and/or wifi) and water (a lot of water for mining), we realize that Canada has enough experience and resources to cover all these elements.
The start point could be the subdivision of Canada’s mining map according to long term needs and necessities and building/maintaining the infrastructure badly needed for approved projects.
As currently lead by the Australians (various papers by Heinson, Begg, Griffith, O'Reilly, etc) - the next stage for mineral exploration is the entire "Mineral System" approach using geophysical methods such as magnetotellurics and seismic (active and passive) to target lithospheric scale fluid conduits. Various countries now have significant broadband seismometer arrays (e.g. US EarthScope, Alparray, AusArray, Chinese Sinoprobe) which can be used to provide the background sub-continental lithospheric mantle features, which can then be used to define regions for "densification" using other geophysical techniques. Canada does not have such a facility - but this is being proposed through the new EON-ROSE research initiative which could be used as a platform to catch up to these other countries.
